247 – Faced with the worst water crisis in its history, Sabesp has initiated a plan of cuts that should reach 600 layoffs – or 10% of the payroll. According to union leaders, 300 dismissals have already been approved, representing 70% in the company's operational area. Employees are threatening to go on strike.
“The layoffs are clearly a cost-cutting policy by the company that will make service to the public more precarious. How do you combat a water crisis of this magnitude by laying off workers?”, argued the president of the São Paulo Water, Sewage and Environment Workers Union (Sintaema), to 'Estado de S. Paulo'.
Last year, the company failed to collect R$ 226 million due to the bonus program launched to reduce consumption in the state.
