Bahia 247 - Governor Rui Costa sent a bill to the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (7) granting two promotions for teachers and pedagogical coordinators of elementary and secondary education. The announcement was made by Rui early in the morning, during #PapoCorreria, broadcast live on social media. The measure will represent an average gain of 14% for the category, until May 2019. The project will benefit 29 educators and will have a total investment of R$ 348 million.

The Bill provides for the restructuring of the public elementary and secondary school teaching career, with two promotions for teachers and pedagogical coordinators. The government will advance the payment of 6% on the basic salary of educators, referring to the first promotion, this year. The value of the second promotion will be advanced in September 2018. The Bill defines that the initial salary for teachers will be R$ 2.446,66, above the National Minimum Wage for the Category (R$ 2.298,80).

Promotions are contingent upon enrollment and attendance by teachers and coordinators in a training course, divided into two modules. Educators must enroll in the first module of the course to be eligible to receive, this year, an advance corresponding to 6% of their base salary. At the end of the course, in May 2018, teachers will be promoted to the next higher grade, within the same pay grade, with a payment of approximately 1% of their base salary. Thus, the promotion will result in an average increase of 7%.

The second module of the course will begin in September 2018, with the advance payment of the 6% salary increase for enrolled teachers and coordinators. At the end of the second module, in May 2019, educators will receive the equivalent of approximately 1% of their basic salary and will be promoted to the next higher grade within the same pay scale. Thus, the second promotion will result in an average increase of 7%.

In this way, elementary and high school teachers and pedagogical coordinators will have an average increase of 14% by September 2019. All benefits calculated on the basic salary will be applied to this percentage. It is worth noting that, to be eligible for promotions, educators must meet the attendance and performance criteria for courses, as stipulated in the Bill.

The promotions for public elementary and secondary school teachers were the result of negotiations between the State Government and union representatives of the category. Thus, both parties reached an agreement that resulted in the Bill submitted to the Assembly. The measure demonstrates the State Government's commitment to education and respect for the work of educators, granting real gains above inflation, even in the face of the country's negative economic situation.
