Reduces waiting list for orthopedic surgery in Sergipe

From September of last year (with the return of the orthopedic surgery campaign) until January 2013, approximately 800 orthopedic surgeries have already been performed at Huse Hospital alone, with more than 200 procedures done as part of the campaign and about 600 in the emergency room; from November 2013 until now, 45 new beds have been opened in the surgical centers specifically for orthopedics in Itabaiana, Lagarto, and Nossa Senhora do Socorro, resulting in an increase of 50 to 100 surgeries per month in each of these units.

Reduces waiting list for orthopedic surgery in Sergipe

ASN - As a result of the new assistance model implemented by the current administration of the State Health Secretariat (SES), the waiting list for patients needing orthopedic procedures at the Sergipe Emergency Hospital (Huse) and regional hospitals has been considerably reduced. From September of last year (with the return of the orthopedic surgery campaign) until January 2013, approximately 800 orthopedic surgeries have already been performed at Huse alone, with more than 200 procedures done as part of the campaign and about 600 in the emergency room.

According to the operational director of the Hospital Health Foundation (FHS), Wagner Andrade, measures related to orthopedics in Sergipe are active on several fronts and have made progress in many of them. In the capital, Huse is the FHS unit responsible for attending to highly complex cases. Serving as backup are the Regional Hospitals of Itabaiana, Lagarto, Nossa Senhora do Socorro, Nossa Senhora da Glória, Estância, and Propriá. Also in Aracaju, the Hospital Cirurgia receives patients with single-traumatic injuries, and the Nestor Piva Hospital (North Zone) and Fernando Franco Hospital (South Zone) refer patients to Huse after evaluation and diagnosis of severity. These last three are the responsibility of the municipality of Aracaju.

“Huse is an open-door unit to receive patients who are seriously injured in accidents, with open fractures and other complexities. The Lagarto Hospital also already functions as an open-door unit for orthopedics. Itabaiana also performs orthopedic procedures,” explains Wagner.

To ensure the network functions smoothly, there are on-call doctors daily at Huse, Hospital Cirurgia, the regional hospitals in Lagarto and Itabaiana, and the UPA Zona Norte. And the results are visible. From November 2013 to the present, 45 new beds have been opened in the surgical centers for orthopedics alone in Itabaiana, Lagarto, and Nossa Senhora do Socorro, resulting in an increase of 50 to 100 surgeries per month in each of these units.

“Until the end of last year, we had a major deficiency in care within the network. The number of orthopedic patients in the Huse Emergency Room was 45 people. We had 90 trauma patients, and of those, 45 were orthopedic. With all this regionalization, we have provided greater care within the network. We already have a total of 300 more surgeries per month since November. Today, especially in the orthopedic area, there are between 9 and 12 patients on the waiting list, a significant reduction,” explains Wagner.

The operations director also points out that this opening of new beds in the interior has systematized the removal of 30 patients from Huse every three days, allocating them to regional referral hospitals. “Other measures have also been adopted to further reduce demand throughout the state. With the operation of the orthopedic service in the Regional Hospitals of Socorro, Lagarto, Itabaiana, in addition to the Hospital de Cirurgia, an important flow has been created in the hospital network, which helps with the fluidity of Huse. The waiting list never ends, however, good management manages to expedite the resolution processes for the most diverse cases,” he states.
