Known for his role in the trial of former Flamengo goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes, accused of the murder and disappearance of model Eilza Samudio, prosecutor Henry Wagner Vasconcelos Castro said this Saturday that he is "vehemently against" the proposal to decriminalize marijuana and other types of drugs. "Those who want the legalization of marijuana are intellectuals or university students, middle-class people."

According to the prosecutor, Brazil risks coming to live under the rule of criminals, which he called "narco-kleptodemocracy," in a lecture on the topic "Impunity, a threat to peace," at the Rotary Club International conference in Montes Claros this morning.

"When I say 'narco-kleptodemocracy,' I'm referring to corrupt individuals and drug traffickers who want to rule the country," said Henry Wagner in an article published on the website of the newspaper O Estado de Minas.

The prosecutor also said that the "softening" of sentences is one of the factors that most contribute to impunity and the growth of crime in Brazil. "We are extremely tolerant of crime. We are also extremely tolerant of the few responses to crimes."

According to him, "the state is visibly bankrupt." Therefore, the population itself needs to mobilize to confront the problem of crime. "Society needs to understand that public safety is a right of all, but also a duty of the entire community."
