PT asks PSDB to block Telhada's intervention in Human Rights cases.
State Representative Beth Sahão (PT) announced that she will request that the president of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, Fernando Capez (PSDB), intervene in the nomination of State Representative Colonel Telhada (PSDB) to join the House's Human Rights Commission; the PSDB Youth also reacted to the nomination of the former ROTA officer.
247 – State Representative Beth Sahão (PT) announced that she will request that the President of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, Fernando Capez (PSDB), intervene in the nomination of State Representative Coronel Telhada (PSDB) to join the House's Human Rights Committee.
According to her, the presence of the former ROTA officer on the permanent commission is an "affront to the fight for human rights."
The PSDB Youth also reacted to the appointment.

São Paulo – The nomination of PSDB deputy Coronel Telhada to the Human Rights Commission of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo has not only angered parties opposed to Governor Geraldo Alckmin, a fellow party member of the former Rota officer. On Saturday (9), the PSDB Youth in São Paulo released a statement requesting that the caucus review the nomination "in respect of the party's historical commitment to the issue". The document is signed jointly with movements that work on issues of race, LGBT and others.
"The PSDB State Youth, Tucanafro, Diversidade Tucana, and PSDB Esquerda para Valer, jointly, through this statement, request that the PSDB parliamentary group reconsider the nomination of Colonel Telhada to the Human Rights Commission in respect of the party's historical commitment to the issue," the text says.
The president of the state-level PSDB Diversity group, Wagner Tronolone, stated that Telhada had already made declarations considered homophobic by the PSDB itself and said that the party had better names to nominate for the commission. "He has made statements that the party itself considered homophobic. This goes against the PSDB's program," said Tronolone.
The minority leader in the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, state deputy Beth Sahão (PT), meets this Tuesday (12) with the president of the House, Fernando Capez (PSDB), to question the nomination of the tucano deputy Coronel Telhada for the Human Rights Commission.
Telhada was nominated by his party to the committee that became known, in the last legislature, chaired by former deputy Adriano Diogo (PT), for its important work focused on defending human rights.
Beth Sahão will tell Capez that Telhada's presence on the commission is an "affront." "Pleasantly advocating is a right for all of us, but we are aware that his presence on this commission will not translate into defending what we have been painstakingly achieving in the area of human rights in Brazil and in the state of São Paulo," she states.
The Workers' Party (PT) is seeking an agreement to maintain its leadership of the committee in the new legislature. However, this task has become more difficult due to the fact that the party's (and the opposition's) representation is smaller than in the previous legislature. The PT currently has 14 representatives, compared to 22 in the legislature that ended in March.
If negotiations lead to a member of the Workers' Party (PT) becoming president of the commission, Sahão herself would be a strong candidate. Among government supporters, Congressman Carlos Bezerra Jr., who has good relations with "progressive" sectors of the PSDB and also good dialogue with the opposition, is a name that would please more open-minded factions within the PSDB itself.
