PT and PSB believe that rapprochement will be slow.
The meeting between the governor of Pernambuco and former president Lula caused surprise in political circles, since the socialists broke with the PT in the last elections and there was no indication of a reconciliation in the short term; the assessment is that the meeting could yield benefits for both parties; the PSB wants to improve its institutional relationship with the federal government, while the PT seeks the necessary support to balance the votes in the Chamber of Deputies, whose presidency is held by Eduardo Cunha (PMDB-RJ), considered an adversary of President Dilma.
Pernambuco 247 - The meeting between the governor and national vice-president of the PSB party, Paulo Câmara, and former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, caused surprise in political circles, since the socialists broke with the PT in the last elections and there was practically no indication of a reconciliation in the short term.
The assessment is that Thursday's meeting could yield positive results for both parties. The PSB wants to improve its institutional relationship with President Dilma Rousseff's government, while the PT may find in the socialist party the necessary support to balance the votes in the Federal Chamber, whose presidency is held by Congressman Eduardo Cunha (PMDB-RJ), who, although belonging to the largest party in the allied base, is considered an adversary of the party.
Despite the movement, the PT leader in the Senate, Humberto Costa (PE), said he does not believe there will be a political rapprochement between PT members and socialists in the short term. "I don't believe that in the short term this could represent a rapprochement in political-electoral terms, for example," he told the Blog do Jamildo. "We are all working towards building a good institutional and administrative relationship between the federal government and the State of Pernambuco. This is important both for the Dilma government and for the PSB government here in the state," he added.
Former minister in Dilma Rousseff's government and senator-elect for Pernambuco, Fernando Bezerra Coelho (PSB), was until recently one of the few voices within the socialist party to advocate for a rapprochement between the two political groups. "This is the beginning of a dialogue that sooner or later needed to be resumed. By going to Lula, Paulo is taking a first step towards rapprochement with the federal government, so that there can be a more amicable and intense dialogue," he told the Jornal do Commercio.
The national president of the PSB party, Carlos Siqueira, told the Folha de Pernambuco newspaper that any possible rapprochement, should it happen, will be gradual. "If there is rapprochement, it will be based on positive ideas for the country. Beyond that, we are not a party seeking positions and we will not behave like a conventional party," he stated.
