Alagoas 247 - The Attorney General of Justice of Alagoas, Alfredo Gaspar de Mendonça Neto, requested, last Monday, January 30th, the arrest of Judge Léo Denisson Bezerra de Almeida. Removed from his duties in November 2016 by the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the magistrate, head of the Marechal Deodoro district, is accused of negotiating a bribe of R$ 200 to release a prisoner. During the investigations, initiated by the Federal Police in 2015, the judge also became a suspect in receiving R$ 50 monthly to benefit the then mayor of the municipality, Cristiano Matheus, as reported by CNJ Minister Nancy Andrichi in her unanimously accepted vote to open an Administrative Proceeding against the magistrate.

According to her, “in the course of such investigations, the Federal Police of Alagoas (PF/AL) collected testimony from a witness who stated that Judge Léo Denisson is known in the municipality of Marechal Deodoro/AL as 'Léo Cinquentinha', given the alleged undue monthly receipt of R$ 50.000,00, in order to ensure protection and favoritism towards Mayor Cristiano Mateus Souza e Silva, as an example of possible omission on the part of the judge in question regarding allegations of misappropriation of public funds that occurred in the administration of the Municipality of Marechal Deodoro-AL”. Based on the Federal Police investigation, Minister Nancy Andrichi reports that the magistrate is accused of failing to act in the face of the alleged misappropriation of R$ 5 million in health resources in the municipality.

According to the report signed by the CNJ minister, Judge Léo Denisson is also suspected of "apparent concealment," in the magistrate's terms, "of assets allegedly acquired with illicitly obtained funds, using alleged intermediaries in whose names movable and immovable property would be registered." According to investigations by the Federal Police, based on witness testimonies and wiretaps, the crimes for which Judge Léo Denisson is accused came to light after a complaint from the prisoner's wife, who revealed the negotiation of a bribe for her husband's release. The Federal Police monitored the conversations between the lawyers, who were arrested in flagrante delicto at the moment the agreed-upon sum was to be delivered to a representative of the judge.
