The objective was to dismantle a gang of swindlers who had been scamming retired university professors in Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro for at least two years. According to investigations, the estimate is that the gang collected around R$ 5 million.
According to the police, the scammers pretended to be lawyers in lawsuits for the victims and communicated that they had been successful in the actions. But they claimed that it was necessary to deposit amounts in order to withdraw the amount deposited in court. A partial balance released at the end of the morning this Friday (24), 17 people were arrested and two weapons, a car, jewelry, money and other unspecified objects were seized.
Investigations indicate that the gang profited between R$2 and R$4 daily from the scam. One of the victims told MGTV that they suffered a loss of R$17.
"It's a scam they've been running for a long time. Many victims don't report it, so we don't know how many victims there are in total," stated Detective Saed Divan, head of the 4th Civil Police Department of Juiz de Fora.
The police operation in Juiz de Fora involved approximately 100 civil police officers, 80 of whom were from the local team, to execute 22 search and seizure warrants and 25 arrest warrants in various parts of the city. In Belo Horizonte, a team of 10 police officers carried out one arrest warrant and three search and seizure warrants.
