Forum Magazine - The Secretary of Social Assistance, Women, and Racial Equality of the municipality of Bodocó, in the interior of Pernambuco, was previously arrested for racism. The incident occurred in 2004 when, still a university student, Maria Luiza Brito offended Military Police officer Leonildo Hilário Nunes and was taken to the Bom Pastor Women's Prison in Recife after being caught in the act.
Maria Luiza got into an argument with a taxi driver who had transported her and three other young people. The disagreement was caused by a lack of money to pay for the ride. According to the police officer's complaint, he tried to intervene in the altercation and was allegedly insulted and discriminated against by the student for being black.
She also allegedly called a friend, PM Captain Alexandre Menezes, and Leonildo ended up being detained for disrespecting the officer at the corporation's Internal Affairs Department. The woman, now a secretary, is the sister of the city's vice-mayor, Edmilson Brito Alencar.
According to reports in the local press, the mayor, Túlio Alves (DEM), also appointed his own father, Brivaldo Alves, as Secretary of Government, Planning and Political Coordination, and his mother, Héldna Alves, to the position of Secretary of Administration and Human Resources. The city hall did not answer calls from reporters.
