Sergipe 247 – “Collapse in the municipalities.” This is the title Cinform gives to this week's “Great Reports” section about the debts of Sergipe's municipalities to the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). “The municipalities of Sergipe owe R$ 906 million to Social Security. These are historical debts, practically unpayable,” states the opening article of the section.

"Hundreds of families in Sergipe have been and are being harmed by the irresponsibility of municipal administrations, which failed to transfer money to the Social Security system. Today, thousands of workers in the interior of the state are suing municipalities because they are unable to retire," says Cinform.

According to the special report, authored by journalist Paula Coutinho, current and former mayors avoid the issue and do not delve into the reality of municipal debts. Many complain about the drop in resources from the Municipal Participation Fund (FPE), the main resource that sustains municipal administrations.

Among the municipalities in Sergipe, Porto da Folha has R$ 18 million in debt, followed by São Cristóvão (with R$ 16,8 million), Japaratuba (R$ 12,6 million), Canindé (R$ 10,4 million) and Capela (R$ 9,7 million). The list of cities with debts in the millions also includes Aquidabã (R$ 6,6 million), São Domingos (R$ 6,4 million), Santa Luzia do Itanhy (R$ 5,5 million), Rosário do Catete (R$ 5,4 million), Indiaroba (R$ 5,2 million), Divina Pastora (R$ 4,3 million), Maruim (R$ 3,9 million), Itabaiana (R$ 3,5 million), Graccho Cardoso (R$ 2,8 million), Simão Dias (R$ 2,6 million), Monte Alegre (R$ 2,5 million), and Carira (R$ 2,5 million).

This Monday (11), mayors from all municipalities meet in Aracaju to discuss the problem with representatives of the Joint Committee of the National Congress, which will discuss Provisional Measure 589/12, which deals precisely with the debts of municipalities and States with the INSS. The federal deputy from Sergipe, Márcio Macêdo (PT), is the president of the committee and the main organizer of the mayors' meeting today. The event takes place from 9 am, at the Association of Agronomist Engineers of Sergipe (Aease).
