Mayor approves New Recife project
The Mayor of Recife, Geraldo Julio (PSB), sanctioned Law No. 08/2015, which encompasses the Specific Plan for the José Estelita, Santa Rita, and Cabanga Wharf; the plan "defines norms and establishes parameters for the use and occupation of this waterfront, considering its landscape, physical-cultural, and economic potential." The Novo Recife project has been the target of constant criticism from the population of the Pernambuco capital; the project, located in the historical center of Recife, foresees the construction of 13 residential and commercial buildings, with up to 38 floors, in the José Estelita Wharf area.

The project, located in the historic center of Recife, foresees the construction of 13 residential and commercial buildings, up to 38 stories high, in the Cais José Estelita area. It also includes the construction of public parks, guaranteed access and visibility of the Pina basin, and the revitalization of urban areas. The bill was unanimously approved by the city councilors.
Novo Recife has been the subject of criticism since 2012, when activists created the Occupy Estelita movement. Since then, several demonstrations have been held in the area, and numerous conflicts have been recorded.
