Bahia 247 - The mayor of Camaçari, Antônio Elinaldo (DEM), stated yesterday that he will request an 'emergency meeting' with Governor Rui Costa (PT) and the Secretary of Public Security of the State (SSP-BA), Maurício Barbosa, to discuss the violence in the largest city in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (RMS).
Through his press office, the Democrat announced that he will request an increase in the number of Military Police officers in the municipality. On Friday night alone, three people were murdered in Camaçari.
Behind the scenes, the opposition in Camaçari is organizing to counter the mayor, saying that he is "exaggerating" the situation because his political group is on the opposite side from Governor Rui Costa.
Over the weekend, two municipal schools were attacked. In a new incident yesterday, an assailant pointed a revolver at the head of a five-year-old child, according to the city hall. 'The increase in violence in Camaçari has left the population uneasy,' the city hall said in a statement.
The city's Secretary of Education, Neurilene Martins, said she was "shocked" by the violence. "I consider the most serious case to be what occurred at the Colônia Monte Negro School. Two robbers jumped over the wall around 11 am this Monday and, with weapons in hand, threatened students, teachers, and staff, even pointing a revolver at a 5-year-old student. They stole the cell phones of the teachers and staff," the teacher stated.
The other robbery occurred in the early hours of Saturday. Thieves entered through the roof of the Neuza Menezes Barreto School and went straight to the computer lab, from where they took six new computers. "It seemed like they knew they were the only new equipment in the school," lamented the Secretary of Education.
