Population of the Northern Region rejects revision of the Master Plan.

A public hearing led by councilman Djalma Araújo at UFG (Federal University of Goiás) was marked by protests from residents against the Hypermarcas construction project and changes to urban planning law; the university and associations joined the campaign and will send documents to the City Council and the mayor requesting that the processing of the matter be halted.

Population of the Northern Region rejects revision of the Master Plan.

Goiás 247_ Suspension of the processing of the Master Plan revision project and the holding of a plebiscite. This is the proposal presented by councilman Djalma Araújo (PT) during a public hearing, on the morning of Tuesday, the 23rd, at the Central Library of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) to discuss the changes presented by the City Hall, which have already been approved in the first vote by the City Council.

The expectation is that the project will be definitively reviewed this Thursday after passing through the Joint Committee. If approved, it will go to Mayor Paulo Garcia for his signature. However, Djalma's demands gained momentum, and the hearing also determined that a commission be created with various social representatives to bring the population's demands to the mayor and request that he remove the project from the agenda.

The rector of UFG, Edward Madureira, informed that he will send an official letter to the City Council requesting the removal of the project from this week's voting agenda, as is the popular desire. “The hearing marked a democratic space. A very positive contribution, and I hope it will help the councilors and mayor when making decisions,” he added: “The represented entities will seek dialogue with the mayor. And UFG will request more time from the City Council and the mayor's office before considering the revision proposals so that the technical issues can be clarified.”

During the debate, political scientists and professors from UFG, Pedro Célio and Frank Tavares, proposed a writ of mandamus as a legal measure to prevent the possible vote on the revision of the Master Plan this week.

Social Impact

Djalma points out that the project only serves the economic sector at the expense of citizens and the environment, since the revision increases the level of nuisance to the maximum level in the Northern region, which legalizes the Hypermarcas project and sets a precedent for other polluting industries.

“We cannot accept this. The city will turn into chaos. The northern region is the source of the waters and will be put at risk. And the impacts will be felt throughout the city. There will be traffic and neighborhood impacts. There will be irreparable environmental damage. One polluting industry opens the door for others. Where one ox goes, a whole herd follows,” Djalma points out.

The session at the City Council was not suspended, which further sparked outrage among the DCE participants. "It's disrespectful that the president of the City Council isn't here and hasn't suspended the session for a more important issue facing the city at this moment," says a DCE member.

Participants in the debate included members of the Central Student Directory (DCE), professors and scientists, the Verdivale Association, the Council of Architecture and Urbanism of Goiás, residents of the Northern region, and councilors Djalma Araújo (PT), Anselmo Pereira (PSDB), Geovani Antônio (PSDB), Dra. Cristina Lopes (PSDB), Elias Vaz (PSol), Paulo Borges (PMDB), and a brief appearance by Felizberto Tavares (PT).
