Sampaio is suspected of ordering the murder of sports commentator Valério Luiz, which occurred on July 5th of last year, after he left the radio station where he worked in the Serrinha neighborhood of Goiânia. The suspicion is that Valério Luiz was killed because of his criticisms of Atlético Goianiense, when Maurício was the club's vice-president.
Lawyers criticize police investigation.
Maurício Sampaio is being defended by renowned lawyers from the capital. As soon as he was arrested on Saturday, his defense team immediately criticized the Civil Police investigation and the direction of the inquiries. "Maurício is absolutely innocent and, therefore, there is no way there can be any evidence against him," says lawyer Neilton Cruvinel Filho.
According to Cruvinel, it would be impossible to find out anything about his client: “Nothing was investigated because there’s no way to investigate something that didn’t happen. Suddenly, out of nowhere, an anonymous complaint appears giving the name of an alleged perpetrator, willing to confess everything.” These statements are in an editorial published by Radio 730, which has Mauricio Sampaio as one of its owners.
