Piauí 247 - The government of Piauí secured R$ 30 million from the federal government's National Penitentiary Fund, with the goal of prioritizing the expansion of prison capacity and ending overcrowding in Piauí's prisons. "These are significant resources, and our objective will be to prioritize expanding prison capacity by tackling our biggest problem, which is precisely the prison overpopulation we have," stated the Secretary of State for Justice, Daniel Oliveira, to Bom Dia PI.

According to the minister, the investments include the construction of two more prison units, one in Parnaíba and the other in Oeiras, both for male inmates, which should provide 800 spaces.

The official reported that construction is underway on two units, one in Campo Maior, which will offer 160 spaces, and another in Altos, offering 600 spaces. “With these two projects underway, plus the two that are coming, and with the resumption this year of another older project, the Teresina Sorting Center, we have a real prospect of eliminating the prison overcrowding deficit in Piauí by 2018. It will be a more modern, more humane, and safer system,” he added.

There are also plans to install a range of technological equipment such as X-ray scanners to eliminate invasive searches by 2018, as well as to acquire vehicles, non-lethal ammunition, new weapons, and personal protective equipment for prison officers.

The secretary informed that the latest public selection process for prison officers remains suspended by state decision, but that it is expected to resume later this month.
