Brazilian Federal Police conduct operation against cardiologists working for a health insurance plan.

Federal police officers are executing 137 court orders issued by the 4th Federal Criminal Court of Palmas, as well as in the Federal District, São Paulo, Goiás, Paraná, Bahia, Ceará, Pará, Mato Grosso, and Mato Grosso do Sul. The operation investigates an alleged corruption scheme aimed at rigging bids in the state of Tocantins, with the objective of acquiring high-value and costly OPMEs (orthoses, prostheses, and special materials) for the healthcare system. Companies, businesspeople, doctors, and public officials allegedly received illicit benefits.

Tocantins 247 – Dubbed Operation PACEMAKER, approximately 330 federal police officers are executing 137 court orders issued by the 4th Federal Criminal Court of Palmas – TRF1. These include 12 temporary arrest warrants, 41 warrants for coercive questioning of businesspeople, and 84 search and seizure warrants in the states of Tocantins, Federal District, São Paulo, Goiás, Paraná, Bahia, Ceará, Pará, Mato Grosso, and Mato Grosso do Sul.

What is being investigated is an alleged corruption scheme aimed at rigging bids in the State of Tocantins, with the objective of acquiring high-value and costly equipment called OPMEs (orthoses, prostheses, and special materials) for the health system.

It all began with the arrest of the partners of the company CARDIOMED COMÉRCIO E REPRESENTAÇÃO DE PRODUTOS MÉDICOS E HOSPITALARES LTDA-EPP. They were supplying the Tocantins State Health Department with products for therapeutic or medicinal purposes whose sterilization expiration dates had passed.

Following the investigations, a large and extensive corruption scheme was uncovered, aimed at rigging bids by manipulating the processes. In this way, companies, doctors, public officials, and business owners received illicit benefits.
Those under investigation may face charges including passive and active corruption, bid rigging, and criminal conspiracy.
