Pedro Simon on Demosthenes: "If he doesn't resign, he will be impeached."
In an interview with the iG portal, the senator from Rio Grande do Sul says he is absolutely shocked by the recordings that reveal the involvement of Demstenes Torres (DEM-GO) with the illegal gambling operator Carlinhos Cachoeira; I trusted this guy.
247 – In the opinion of Senator Pedro Simon (PMDB-RS), the most intelligent course of action that Demóstenes Torres (DEM-GO) could take would be to resign from his Senate seat. According to the senator from Rio Grande do Sul – who even defended Demóstenes when the first accusations linking him to the illegal gambling operator Carlinhos Cachoeira surfaced – his continued presence would subject Parliament to enormous embarrassment. Simon gave an interview to... Power Online column, from the iG portal, published this Sunday.
Because he lied to his colleagues when he made his first defense in the House regarding the accusations – on March 6th, when he stated he had no business dealings with Cachoeira – Demóstenes is now subject to the loss of his mandate for breach of decorum. Simon believes, therefore, that the best thing the DEM senator can do is spare the Senate this embarrassment and spare himself this humiliation. "Because if he doesn't resign, he will be impeached."
Simon says he was “absolutely shocked” when he heard the Federal Police recordings that revealed conversations between the senator from Goiás and the illegal gambling operator. “I trusted this guy,” he said. The PMDB member says it’s evident that the Senate already has grounds to impeach Demóstenes. “He lied to all of us from the Senate floor.” If he doesn’t resign “on Monday,” Simon says Demóstenes will face another humiliation: being expelled from his party (which he calls PFL). At the end of the week, the DEM gave Demóstenes until Tuesday to explain himself.
In the interview, Pedro Simon asserts that before the incident, he would have placed Demóstenes on a list of three or four honest members of Congress. "He seemed like the toughest guy in the world." The PMDB senator praised the fact that the Democrat was always present at the CPIs (Parliamentary Commissions of Inquiry) and the finger-pointing he had already done against Jader Barbalho and Renan Calheiros, but affirms that "the guy had two faces" and that he thinks "it's a pathological case."
