247 - Palmeiras drew 1-1 with Coritiba on Wednesday night at the Couto Pereira stadium in Curitiba, becoming the undefeated champion of the Copa do Brasil this season, ending a 12-year drought without national titles. The home team opened the scoring with Ayrton, and Betinho equalized. Information from the Band website.

With this trophy, the São Paulo-based team Palmeiras earned the right to compete in the Copa Libertadores de América next year.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's team won the title undefeated, with eight wins and two draws. This tied them with Cruzeiro in 2003, the last team to win the championship without a single loss.

In the history of the competition, which began in 1989, five teams have managed to lift the trophy without losing. Grêmio, with three undefeated championships: (89/94/97). The two-time champion Cruzeiro (2000/03), Corinthians (95), Flamengo (90) and Criciúma (91).

With this achievement, Palmeiras became the biggest national champion with ten titles, since previously they had two Taça Brasil (60/67); two Roberto Gomes Pedrosa (67/69) four Brasileiros (72/73/93/94) and Copa do Brasil (98).

The Game

Needing a result, Coritiba pressed forward with a header from Everton Costa in the 2nd minute. Coxa was pressing high up the pitch.

Palmeiras withstood the initial pressure well, kept the ball on the ground, and grew stronger mainly down the left flank with Juninho and Mazinho. And that's how they created their first opportunities.

At 12 minutes, Mazinho passed to Juninho, who shot from distance, and Vanderlei deflected the ball for a corner. At 19 minutes, Marcos Assunção took a free kick from the left side, and Betinho arrived late.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's well-organized team made a good transition from midfield to attack, with speed. That's what happened in the 27th minute. Assunção took a free kick near the center of the field, and the ball went close.

In the next minute, the home team responded. On the right, Everton Costa passed to Rafinha, who shot across goal to Bruno's right.

Thiago Heleno, injured, left the field and was replaced by Leandro Amaro in the 37th minute.

Coritiba had 56% possession of the ball, while their rival had 44%.

Second time

For the second half, coach Marcelo Oliveira opted to bring on Ayrton in place of Jonas.

Coritiba, needing a win, went on the attack and, after applying pressure, scored. Ayrton scored in the 16th minute from a free kick: 1-0.

And before the Coxa fans even had time to celebrate, Palmeiras equalized in the 20th minute. Marcos Assunção took a free kick and Betinho headed it in: 1-1.

And Luiz Felipe Scolari's team came close to a second goal, through a free kick by Marcos Assunção, which hit the post in the 28th minute. At the same time, Luan suffered an injury and dragged himself along until the end.

Coritiba also tried with Anderson Aquino, who came on to replace Roberto. But that was all.
