The venue for the Copa América final has been closed.
After River Plate's relegation was confirmed, fans caused destruction at the Monumental de Nuez Stadium.
The violence perpetrated by River Plate fans after the team's relegation from the Argentine Championship last Sunday caused serious damage to the Monumental de Nuñez Stadium, scheduled to host the Copa América final this year on July 24th. The stadium's closure was confirmed on Monday.
The possibility of overcrowding was raised – the attendance was estimated at 52 people, while the maximum recommended capacity, for safety reasons, is 40. According to authorities, it is too early to say when the stadium will be cleared, but it should be available for the continental competition final.
"We will seek evidence of the incident. The stadium will remain closed until all investigations are completed and we have collected all the evidence," declared the prosecutor of the city of Buenos Aires, Gustavo Galante.
In addition to the vandalism at the facilities, the violence caused harm to the fans themselves. In total, according to figures released by the police on Monday, there are already 89 injured, of which about 30 are police officers, in addition to 55 detainees.
The club's historic relegation, the first in its 110-year history, after a 1-1 draw against Belgrano, could still cause several changes at River Plate. There is speculation that president Daniel Passarella may resign, which he has denied, and even a change of headquarters due to the damage to the Monumental de Nuñez stadium.
