Paim: Brazil needs better well-being for the elderly.

The country is in a bad situation regarding benefits for retirees and pensioners; this is the assessment of Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS); in a survey of 150 nations, Brazil ranked 61st on the list of the best countries to retire in, the Global Retirement Index; according to the parliamentarian, this represents a drop of 21 positions; Paim states that the readjustment of pensions and health plans are a factor that harms the quality of life of retirees and pensioners, because they are too expensive and leave much to be desired.

The Senate Agency - Brazil is in a bad situation regarding benefits for retirees and pensioners, warned Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS) this Monday (14). This is because, in a survey of 150 countries, Brazil came in 61st place on the list of the best countries to retire in, the Global Retirement Index. This represents a drop of 21 positions, according to the senator.

Paulo Paim explained that the research took into account four items: having good health and access to health services; having a comfortable life; having access to quality investments; and living in a clean and safe environment.

In Paim's opinion, health insurance plans are a factor that negatively impacts the quality of life of retirees and pensioners because they are too expensive and leave much to be desired. Another problem is the adjustment of pensions.

- Another determining factor for Brazil's fall in this ranking is the [low] adjustments to pensions above the minimum wage, which have an indexation rate based solely on the INPC (National Consumer Price Index), that is, without the real growth that, in theory, would accompany the adjustment of the minimum wage. This issue needs to be reviewed - he stated, in a new criticism of the so-called social security factor, which has reduced the value of pensions.

He recalled that the Senate has already approved PLS 58/2003, authored by him, which is currently being processed in the Chamber of Deputies under number 4.434 and restores the benefits.

Paim also expressed hope that the Senate would approve this week the bill dealing with the renegotiation of state and municipal debts with the federal government, and that the Chamber of Deputies would soon approve the Statute for Persons with Disabilities.
