The payment of the 13th-month salary this year should inject R$ 118 billion into the Brazilian economy, an amount representing 2,9% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to a study by the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese) released today. Approximately 78 million people will benefit, a number 5,4% higher than that recorded in 2010. Last year, Dieese estimated that R$ 102 billion would be injected into the economy in 2011 with the 13th-month salary, a projection 15,6% lower than the number released now.

Nearly 30% of the R$118 billion, or just over R$34 billion, will go to retirees and pensioners. Beneficiaries of the National Social Security Institute (INSS) will receive 19,4% (R$22,9 billion) of the total. Federal retirees and pensioners will receive R$6,1 billion (5,2%), and state retirees and pensioners will receive R$5,4 billion (4,5%). But the largest share, about 70%, which corresponds to R$84 billion, will go to formally employed workers.

Of the total 78 million people who will receive the 13th-month salary at the end of the year, according to Dieese, 61,9% (48,3 million) are formally employed and 38,1% (29,7 million) are retirees and pensioners. Domestic workers with signed work contracts total 2,4 million, or 3,1% of the total. One million, or 1,2% of the total, are retirees and pension beneficiaries of the Federal Government. Retirees and pensioners from the States were not quantified.

Among workers with formal employment contracts, those in the service and public administration sectors will receive 60,1% of the R$ 84 billion allocated to the formal market; those in industry will receive 20,7%, and retail workers, 12,5%. Those working in construction will receive the equivalent of 4,8%, and 2% will go to agricultural workers.

The 13th-month salary paid to formal employees averages R$ 1.783,47, with service sector workers receiving the highest average amount at R$ 2.045,78. The industrial sector has the second highest average amount, at R$ 1.912,56, followed by construction workers (R$ 1.422,94), commerce workers (R$ 1.186,48), and primary sector workers (R$ 984,88). By region, the highest average 13th-month salary will be paid in Brasília (R$ 3.193) and the lowest in Maranhão (R$ 974).

Dieese's estimates take into account data from the Annual Social Information Report (Rais) and the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Workers (Caged), both from the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), as well as information from the 2009 National Household Sample Survey (Pnad) of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and data from the Ministry of Social Security and Assistance (MPAS) and the National Treasury Secretariat (STN).
