“Occupying is not a choice, it’s a lack of choice. Nobody takes their children to live in a makeshift tent, stepping in the mud, because they like it. Those who are occupying land today are there because they have no other alternative for housing. They are unemployed, or rent takes up a large part of their salary and they cannot support themselves. The crisis has hit everyone, but you can help!”, says the campaign website.
The land in São Bernardo do Campo has been occupied by at least 8 families for 45 days. The movement says that the site was not fulfilling its social function, and that the people there "are seeking the right to housing, facing the difficulties and precarious conditions of living in makeshift tents, and also suffering from prejudice from neighbors and the constant threat of eviction."
