Piauí 247 - A survey conducted by Eletrobras Piauí revealed that 54 of the state's 224 municipalities are in arrears with the company due to non-payment of their electricity bills. According to the company, the combined debt of the municipalities amounts to approximately R$ 23 million. As a result, the distributor reported 43 municipalities to the State Court of Auditors (TCE) for action to be taken. Another 34 municipalities were included in the Register of Delinquent Debtors (Cadin).
According to Rafaela Moreira, assistant to the commercial director of Eletrobras, one of the measures being taken by the company is the suspension of energy supply to municipalities. She stated that when all possibilities for negotiation are exhausted, the company cuts off the supply and notifies the Court of Auditors (TCE).
"This has been a monthly routine at the company since 2013, when we conducted major debt repayment campaigns with these municipalities. And all this debt generates a very large impact on the company's cash flow, in terms of its maintenance, daily operation, and new investments in the sector. Furthermore, it impacts the tariff, which consequently affects all consumers in Piauí," he told G1.
Eletrobras has announced that the company is in open negotiations with municipalities to renegotiate their debts. Payment plans will only be available until December of this year.
