"We cannot continue importing doctors."
Senate candidate and former minister Geddel Vieira Lima (PMDB) believes that the 'More Doctors' program will not solve the healthcare deficit; "Doctors need to go to distant municipalities and have career progression. We cannot continue importing doctors; this doesn't solve the problem forever. The solution is to create a professional career path within the SUS (Unified Health System)"; he reiterated that there is no ill-feeling between the PMDB and the Planalto Palace regarding his support for Aécio Neves (PSDB); "Party loyalty will only be possible with political reform. In the meantime, I am playing by the rules of the game as a party dissident."
Bahia 247 - Candidate for senator for Bahia, former Minister of Integration Geddel Vieira Lima, from the PMDB party, reaffirms his "willingness to face controversial issues" in Congress and, regarding health, suggests a national career path for doctors in the SUS (Brazilian public healthcare system), because, in his assessment, the Mais Médicos (More Doctors) program will not solve the deficit in the area.
"I have leadership in the Senate and knowledge to deal with this in Congress, so that doctors can go to distant municipalities and have career progression until the end of their lives. We cannot continue importing doctors, this does not solve the problem forever, the solution is to create a professional career within the SUS," said the PMDB member in an interview with Metrópole radio, in Salvador, this Monday (11), for the 'Vota Bahia' series.
Geddel also said that the progress of the Family Health Program in Bahia is still "timid" and highlighted "the need to build new regional hospitals and spread health centers throughout the state."
The former minister reiterated that there is no ill feeling between the PMDB party and the presidential palace because the party is supporting the candidacy of Senator Aécio Neves, from the PSDB party, for president against Dilma Rousseff, from the PT party, who is seeking re-election.
"Party loyalty will only be possible with political reform. In the meantime, I'm playing by the rules of the game as a party dissident because I don't agree with the rules as they are."
The PMDB member once again criticized "the current president's lack of management, which has allowed important achievements to slip through her fingers."
"You have to know how to build consensus and manage dissent; inflation is back, unemployment is knocking at the door, factories are closing. Democracy requires alternation of power, movement, and a clash of ideas that mobilize society."
