"There will be no unemployment in the shipbuilding industry," says Dilma.

blog do plateau - President Dilma Rousseff stated this Friday (8), in Rio Grande (RS), during the ceremony for the completion of the P-58 platform, that the demand for platforms will be enormous in the coming years and that the Brazilian shipbuilding industry needs to prepare to meet the new equipment production contracts.

"It's impossible that there's any risk of not having contracts for the production of equipment and ships. The difficulty will be different; we have to be able to produce these ships and platforms on time and with quality. We'll have to manage it. In the Libra Field, just to give you an idea, there are between 12 and 16 platforms. This means we'll have extra demand (...) There's not the slightest possibility that there won't be jobs in the Brazilian shipbuilding industry. I want to tell you, this is my commitment to you, I will look after this, I will ensure that this happens, I will fight for this to happen," he said.

Dilma Rousseff recalled the struggle to revive the shipbuilding industry and stated that if Brazil today has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world, with a situation of near full employment, it is because several industries have been revived, including the shipbuilding industry.

"We are very happy when we see something that we fought for, that they said wasn't possible, that they said Graça Foster and I were crazy. When we started a process of discussion about producing in Brazil whatever was possible, mainly regarding the shipbuilding industry. It was 2003, I never tire of telling this story. I was Lula's Minister of Mines and Energy. Graça was Secretary of Gas and Oil. We were both given the task of building platforms in Brazil. It's good to remember that at that time there were no platforms built in Brazil. The shipbuilding industry, which had been a strong industry in Brazil, had practically disappeared. We thought it was absurd that it wasn't possible to build platforms and ships in Brazil."

To the workers of the P-58 platform, the president cited the law that guarantees oil revenues for education and health, and said that by helping to extract oil from the sea, they are also contributing to making education a lever for the country's development.

"Education is something that can transform our country. You are responsible for this, because you are the ones enabling this country to use the immense wealth that is Libra to invest in education. I say this because I think it's all connected. Oil must have national content. Oil must become the greatest force for growth in Brazil, improving our trade balance. It can also transform this country into a developed one, giving people access to knowledge."

'Completion of P-58 shows the recovery of the Brazilian shipbuilding industry'

In an interview with radio stations Bandeirantes AM and Cultura Riograndina this morning, Dilma stated that the completion of the P-58 platform is an example of the resurgence of the Brazilian shipbuilding industry. The president recalled that the shipbuilding industry had only two thousand workers in 2003 and that today the sector employs 73 people.

"The P-58 is part of this effort we made to change the shipyard situation. That's another thing I'm passionate about, shipyards. We were a player in 1982, then the shipbuilding industry ended, it was practically destroyed. In 2003 there were two thousand workers, today there are 73 thousand workers, each platform employs around five thousand workers," she said.

Dilma went to Rio Grande (RS) to visit the construction works of the hulls of the P-66 and P-67 platforms and to participate in the completion ceremony of the P-58. The platform will produce 180 barrels of oil and 6 million cubic meters of gas daily. The P-58 will be installed in the Baleia Azul Field, in the Campos Basin, about 85 kilometers off the coast of Espírito Santo, in waters 1.400 meters deep. It will be connected to 9 water injection wells and 15 production wells by means of 250 kilometers of flexible pipelines, which will carry the oil to the platform.
