'Murdoch is not fit to run a company of international scale'
British lawmakers held the media mogul responsible for the phone-hacking culture that has shaken his News Corporation empire. David Cameron's Conservative Party disagreed with the decision.
247 with international agencies - British parliamentarians stated on Tuesday that media mogul Rupert Murdoch is unfit to run a large international company. Lawmakers also called for him to be held accountable for the phone-hacking culture that has shaken his News Corporation media empire. The statements were made in a report by a multi-party parliamentary committee, approved by six votes to four. The dissenting opinions came from members of the Conservative Party, the same party as Prime Minister David Cameron.
Conservative Philip David, also a member of the committee, said that MPs had “absolutely no evidence” to reach the “utterly ridiculous” conclusion about Murdoch’s incompetence at the helm of News Corp. But Labour MP Tom Watson stated that, “more than any living person,” Murdoch is to blame for the scandal and the report had to make that clear.
Lawmakers listed failings by the 81-year-old head of the corporation, his son James, and a firm that they say showed "willful blindness" to the extent of the phone hacking at the defunct British tabloid News of the World. "Their instinct during that time, until it was too late, was to cover up rather than investigate the violations and discipline their perpetrators," the lawmakers said in the 85-page report.
Cameron, who acknowledged that the British political elite spent years under the yoke of the Murdochs, faces criticism on the eve of local elections this week, which allege that he is too close to the media mogul.
