Justice

By telephone, the judge in charge of the Domestic and Family Violence Court against Women in the capital, Paulo Zacarias da Silva, stated that 7.352 cases have been in progress since 2008, with investigations originating from the two police stations in the capital. According to the magistrate, half of them relate to criminal proceedings and the other half to protective measures, determined through preliminary injunctions concerning child custody, alimony, visitation rights, restraining orders, and others.

"Unfortunately, we rely on this amount because we depend on expert reports or when the women move. Ideally, another court would also be built. Regarding the increase in the number of cases, the only alternative to curb crime is media coverage and raising awareness among victims, who are more encouraged nowadays," explained the judge.

Between August 7th and 8th, the magistrate will lead the seminar "Confronting Gender Violence - reflections, challenges and experiences in the 8 years of the Maria da Penha Law", which will take place at the Superior School of the Judiciary of Alagoas (Esmal), in Farol.

In addition to celebrating the anniversary of the law, it will be an opportunity for the professional development of legal professionals and other involved professionals, explains Paulo Zacarias. "The law is excellent in theory, but we want it to be excellent in practice as well," he emphasized. Registration, which will be free, will take place from the second half of July, on a date to be announced on the website of the Court of Justice of Alagoas (TJ/AL).
