Da Forum magazine - Collectives, entities and social movements sent, this Friday (25), a petition to the governor of São Paulo, Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB), in which they demand explanations about the statements given by the new commander of the Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (ROTA), of the PM of São Paulo.

In an interview, Commander Ricardo Augusto Nascimento de Mello Araújo He argued that the police should act differently in an upscale neighborhood like Jardins than in the outskirts of the city, reinforcing the distinction in treatment based on social class..

The petition, signed by movements such as Frente Alternativa Preta, Uneafro, Perifatividade, among others, raises numerous questions regarding Araújo's statement.

“Where is the legal basis for the differentiated action policy promoted daily by the Military Police, depending on the characteristics of “peripheral” areas or the “Jardins profile,” as currently stated by the ROTA commander?” they ask, among eight other questions. In the document, the organizations also request a public hearing between civil society, the Public Security Secretariat, and the Military Police to discuss the matter. The São Paulo Police Ombudsman, Julio Cesar Neves, also put the government under pressure. On Friday (25), he sent an official letter to the Public Security Secretariat demanding “action” regarding the statements made by the new Rota commander. For Neves, Araújo's statement was “elitist”.

"The commander's statement is unconstitutional, discriminatory, and blatantly elitist. People from the outskirts of the city must be treated the same way people from the Jardins neighborhood are treated. It was unfortunate," said the ombudsman.

Among the "measures" that the ombudsman demands in the official letter, he cited "the dissemination of information to the troops that all citizens are and should be treated equally and, if deemed necessary, a possible change in command."
