Ceara 247 - State Representative Mirian Sobreira (Pros), announced this Thursday morning, the 12th, on the floor of the Legislative Assembly, that she is taking leave from her parliamentary duties today to assume the Special Secretariat for Drug Policies. The secretary will take office this afternoon. She highlighted that the secretariat “will start from scratch,” as there was no preceding body. “The lack of data is the biggest problem. We don't know concretely how many drug users there are in the State,” she explained.

Sobreira also said that other challenges facing the department include a lack of funding and human resources. “There is a shortage of qualified personnel to treat drug addicts. We are searching universities and hospitals for people to properly deal with this problem. We are already in contact with state and federal deputies to seek help in approving legislation related to the department and securing the necessary resources,” he emphasized.

The congresswoman, who was invited by Governor Camilo Santana (PT) to take over the new secretariat, also informed that one of the plans of the Camilo government is to allocate 2% to 5% of job openings in state construction projects to former drug users. The Special Secretariat will operate in the current Drug Reference Center, in the Jacarecanga neighborhood.

According to her, the department will initially operate on three axes: prevention, treatment, and resocialization. “We want to mobilize all segments of society. In politics, we want to mobilize municipal, state, and federal levels. We want to increase the number of beds in hospitals equipped to treat drug users. We want to resocialize them with their families and the job market,” she pointed out. The congresswoman also highlighted that since receiving Camilo's invitation, she has been working to initiate the department's activities, always seeking information about the department's needs.
