Bahia 247 - The 'Doctors for Democracy' movement launched its committee in Salvador at an event held this Friday (1st) in the auditorium of the Bahia Doctors Union (Sindmed). The group opposes the position of the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) - which defends the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff.

"As a doctor, I am very proud of the birth and strength of this movement, which goes against the conservative corporatism that has unfortunately guided the actions of leaders of medical class entities. Doctors for Democracy understands that impeachment is a coup, its main agenda is the strengthening of the SUS (Brazilian Public Health System), and you can count on us to denounce in Congress the absurdity of PEC 241, proposed by Temer, which imposes a 20-year freeze on health spending," said federal deputy Jorge Solla (PT-BA), who participated in the event.

He pointed out that if the project had been in effect since 2003, the Health Budget in 2015 would have been R$ 55 billion, almost half of the R$ 100,5 billion that was actually spent. "You would probably have half the network you have today, which is already insufficient," he emphasized.

At the event, Professor Jairnilson Paim, a public health expert from UFBA, gave a lecture highlighting historical data that demonstrate the advancements of the SUS (Brazilian Unified Health System) in recent decades in terms of coverage and improvements in health indicators, even with low per capita resource allocation compared to other countries in the world that have universal and free public healthcare.

During the event, the crowd repeatedly chanted "Out with Temer!" The Doctors for Democracy movement will make its street debut at the July 2nd parade this Saturday.
