The wave of popular protests that swept Brazil has reached the medical community in Bahia. Organizations such as ABM, Cremeb, and Sindimed are holding a demonstration in defense of quality public healthcare this Wednesday at 16 PM in Campo Grande, from where they will proceed to Praça Castro Alves. Services are suspended for 24 hours in public hospitals.

This action is part of a national movement aimed at drawing attention to the strengthening of the Unified Health System (SUS), as well as the approval of the career and salary plan for state doctors and other health professionals, such as nurses, dentists, and biochemists (PEC 454/09).

The professionals will also take the opportunity to protest against the arrival of foreign doctors, a proposal by the federal government to work in underserved regions.

Currently in Salvador, several hospitals have been experiencing problems with emergency care, with the indefinite suspension of services at Santo Amaro (Barra) and Jorge Valente (Av. Garibaldi), for example.
