Doctors are "giving up" on working for the Government of Alagoas.
According to the union representing the profession, more than a thousand professionals have already left the state due to the devaluation of their profession. On strike since last year, the doctors are fighting for salary increases, improved working conditions, the holding of public service examinations, and the implementation of a Career and Salary Plan. The union president, Wellington Galvão, calls Governor Vilela (PSDB) "insensitive and irresponsible because he observes the exodus of doctors from his own state and doesn't care about the chaos."
Alagoas247 - The president of the Alagoas Doctors' Union (Sinmed/AL), Wellington Galvão, once again condemned the stance of Governor Teotônio Vilela Filho (PSDB) regarding negotiations with the medical profession. According to him, the chaos in public health continues to compromise care for the population in Alagoas, with the shortage of professionals reaching its limit. Proof of this is that 90% of the staff at a hospital in Palmares, on the border between Alagoas and Pernambuco, is made up of doctors from Alagoas.
According to Wellington Galvão, since the beginning of the strike – which began last year – the population of the capital and the interior has suffered from the departure of doctors, dissatisfied with salaries and the precarious conditions of health units. Six years ago, Alagoas had 2.500 professionals, but currently this number does not exceed 1,2. Those who resist the lack of working conditions still try to fill the space left by those who have already left the state, doubling their shift hours to meet the demand of patients, while the government stubbornly refuses to announce a public recruitment process.
"The governor's lack of humanity is astonishing. He is insensitive and irresponsible because he observes the exodus of doctors from his own state and doesn't care at all about the chaos we are experiencing," the president criticized.
Last Thursday (25), councilor for Maceió Cléber Costa (PT), during a session at the City Council, informed his colleagues about what is happening with medical professionals and, last week, met with Teotônio Vilela and representatives of the union, in an attempt to end the strike. Wellington Galvão thanked the councilor for the support offered, but lamented the State's inaction.
“I didn’t go to the meeting because Vilela didn’t want to see me. I appreciate the Chamber’s involvement with our cause, as well as that of Senator Fernando Collor [PTB], who is trying to resolve our situation. Unfortunately, the conflict stems from the governor, because he thinks I’m engaging in terrorism. But we are complying with all the legal requirements and claiming our rights. Everyone is trying to guarantee a minimum of dignity for the population because there aren’t even any professionals left to perform immobilization,” Galvão pointed out, referring to the exodus of more than 1,2 doctors.
Since last year, doctors have been fighting for salary increases, improved working conditions, the holding of public examinations, and the implementation of the Career, Position, and Salary Plan (PCCS). The union has been appealing to all sectors of organized civil society, as well as to the constituted powers, such as the Court of Justice, which had already tried to mediate a solution to the problem with Governor Teotônio Vilela.
