Maurren wins gold in the long jump at the Troféu Brasil.
Olympic champion confirms favoritism and wins comfortably this Sunday at Ibirapuera Stadium in São Paulo.
Brazilian long jumper Maurren Maggi lived up to her status as favorite and easily won the event on Sunday at the Troféu Brasil, held at the Ícaro de Castro Melo Stadium in Ibirapuera, São Paulo. The Olympic champion comfortably cleared 6,74 meters on her third attempt.
The mark was enough to earn her the championship title. The country's top pole vaulter even risked missing the tournament due to thigh pain and will now focus on preparing for the World Athletics Championships and the Pan American Games in Guadalajara. In these competitions, she hopes to jump 7 meters.
Previously, Marren had fouled on her first jump and reached 6,65 meters on her second. After reaching 6,74 meters, she gave up on her other attempts. The podium for the long jump competition was completed by Eliane Martins, with 6,58 meters, and Vanessa Vieira Seles, with 6,48 meters.
INDEX - Jailma Sales qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea, between August 27th and September 4th. She won the 400-meter hurdles at the Troféu Brasil and achieved the qualifying time for the competition with a time of 56.38 seconds. This will be Jailma's first participation in an individual event at the World Championships, as she previously participated in the Brazilian relay team.
TRIPLE JUMP - Without Jadel Gregório, the triple jump event was won by Jefferson Dias Sabino, with 17,07 meters. He had already qualified for the World Athletics Championships and the Pan American Games. "I had been training well, but I hadn't been landing my jumps. Now it's about continuing to train to achieve a better result at the World Championships, which will be very competitive with the presence of Olympic finalists. I will also work on controlling my anxiety, because that sometimes hinders me a bit in competitions," he said.
Hilton da Silva finished the competition in second place, with 16,93 meters, surpassing the qualifying mark for the World Championships by 1 centimeter. "I'm happy because the initial goal was this, to qualify for the World Championships. At the same time, I'm a little disappointed because I could have jumped 17 meters. My expectation here was to reach 17,30m. Who knows, maybe I can achieve this mark at the Universiade and thus secure my place at the Pan American Games," he stated.
200 METERS - Ana Cláudia Lemos finished the Troféu Brasil with three gold medals. After winning the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay, she won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.68 seconds. Although she didn't surpass the South American record she had set on Saturday (22.48 seconds), she confirmed her qualification for the World Championships.
"I broke two important records held by Lucimar Moura, who was the best Brazilian sprinter for many years. I have enormous affection for her; she always advises me and is a very special person," said Ana Cláudia, who is also the South American record holder in the 100-meter dash.
The men's 200-meter race was won by Bruno Lins, with a time of 20.21 seconds, faster than the 20.16 seconds he recorded in Saturday's semifinals, when he broke the Troféu Brasil record that had stood for 22 years. The sprinter had also won the 100-meter dash at Ibirapuera.
"I entered the competition with a very good, balanced body and mind. In the semi-final, I surpassed a record that belonged to Robson Caetano and had stood for many years. You have to really want it and never stop dreaming that it's possible to even surpass the Brazilian record in the event, which belongs to Claudinei Quirino (19.89 seconds, in 1999, in Munich)," he stated.
RECORD - Kleberson Davide won the 800-meter race with a time of 1min44s21, breaking the Troféu Brasil record previously held by Zequinha Barbosa with 1min44s3, achieved in 1983. The athlete had already qualified for the event at the World Athletics Championships.
