Alagoas247 - Members of the board of directors of the Santa Mônica Maternity Hospital and the Secretary of State for Health (Sesau) Rozangela Wyszomirska will meet this Friday (20) to decide whether the unit will remain closed. Santa Mônica was closed on Thursday night (19), after a short circuit. 18 days ago, the unit started receiving high-risk pregnant women and babies again, referred by the Maceió Regulatory Complex (Cora).

The maternity ward was without power for 11 hours: from 16 PM on Thursday until 2 AM on Friday. The pregnant women and the 17 babies, who were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), were transferred to the State General Hospital (HGE), Nossa Senhora de Fátima Hospital and Maternity, Hospital do Açúcar, and Hospital Arthur Ramos.

Throughout the night and into the morning, high-risk pregnant women were still arriving at the hospital without any information about what had happened. Some waited outside for news about the transfer of their babies. TV crews captured the moment when an ambulance driver left the maternity ward, outraged to find the place in darkness. There was also a mother who had received no information about where her baby had been transferred.

Earlier in the week, irregularities had already been reported by maternity hospital staff, who released images of leaks in the ceiling of the pre-delivery and recovery rooms, which resulted in flooding. Patients were transferred to another room in the unit, and staff had to occupy another space.

The Regional Council of Medicine of Alagoas (Cremal) considers the transfer absurd. "It's a succession of errors that are being taken recklessly. The situation today is very serious. We no longer have Santa Mônica, nor the University Hospital, nor any building," said the president of Cremal, Fernando Pedrosa.

Regarding the meeting scheduled for this Friday, Cremal was not informed. "They're going to have another meeting and they're not inviting the council. I can only imagine what worse measures they might take," he reported.

Official statement released by Sesau:

Government transfers patients and closes Santa Mônica hospital after short circuit.
Following a short circuit in the electrical network of the Santa Mônica Maternity School, the unit's management transferred the inpatients to maternity hospitals affiliated with the SUS (Brazilian Public Health System), and Governor Renan Filho ordered the closure of the building, which has been under renovation since the previous administration in March 2014.

The decision aims to ensure the full recovery of mothers and babies who were being cared for at the Santa Mônica Maternity School, where a task force will work to complete the unit's renovation as quickly as possible.

Renan Filho and the Secretary of State for Health, Rozangela Wyszomirska, also ordered a thorough investigation into the causes and responsibilities for the problems in the construction that caused disruption to employees and users of the maternity hospital, which is a reference center for the care of high-risk pregnant women and premature babies.
