The Atlantic Forest loses 13 hectares in one year.
The area lost between May 2010 and May 2011 is smaller than that recorded in the previous period, which was more than 15 hectares.
Agency Brazil - More than 13 hectares of Atlantic Forest were deforested in Brazil between May 2010 and May 2011, according to a survey released this Tuesday, the 29th, by the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation and the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). In the previous survey (2008–2010), the deforested area corresponded to an average of 15.597 hectares annually. Currently, only 7,9% of the original vegetation cover remains in the biome.
According to the survey, the states where the situation is most worrying are Minas Gerais, where 6.339 hectares were deforested between May 2010 and May 2011, and Bahia, where deforestation reached 4.493 hectares during the same period. The states with the least deforested areas (in hectares) are Goiás, with 33; Paraná, with 71; and Rio de Janeiro, with 92.
