Goiás 247 - With a focus on strengthening the Prison System, Governor Marconi Perillo inaugurated this Sunday morning (29) the expansion of the Jataí prison (GO), which now has 86 spaces, delivered new vehicles, modern weapons and ammunition.
"We are completing some prisons and building others in Goiás, and through a partnership with the Court of Justice, we will further expand the number of prison spaces," stated Marconi, who explained to those present at the inauguration that the increased security has already made it possible to reduce crime rates in Jataí.
According to the director of the prison unit, Danilo Fernandez Guimarães, "the construction will more than double the current capacity of the prison, following the standards of the Penal Execution Law and the State Secretariat of Public Security, which represents more security for the officer and quality for the inmate."
The total area of the prison complex is 528,39 m², comprising the cell blocks, reception area, restrooms, visiting rooms, exercise yard, guard tower, and walkway to the guard tower. Marconi stated that, through regularly conducted surveys, it is possible to ascertain that "more than 60% of the population considers security a top priority."
The mayor of Jataí, Vinícius Luz (PSDB), added that "in just over a year" the government "doubled the size of the Military Police force." He emphasized that the partnership between the city hall and the Government of Goiás "has generated highly positive results for the people who live in Jataí." Marconi Perillo recalled that the government is training 117 new military police officers "and when we hold the new recruitment process, we will have 80 more men in Jataí."
Vice-Governor Zé Eliton, who previously headed the Public Security department, said that the government is also delivering modern weaponry to the Goiás police, "visiting the Goiás na Frente works in the municipality, highlighting the resurfacing of urban roads (200 m²), and launching the Goiás na Frente Social program."
Marconi and security
At the Meeting of Brazilian Governors on “Security and Border Control – Drug Trafficking, a National Emergency”, held last week in Rio Branco (AC), Marconi Perillo argued that it is long past time for the Federal Government to allocate budget resources to public security in all Brazilian municipalities, that the creation of a Public Security Fund is urgent, and also effective border control.
The governor recalled that during his time leading the State Executive, he created the Border Operations Command (COD), which has already seized more than 100 kilos of drugs, in addition to thousands of weapons. There are 25 posts in the State. He also informed that the state government should invest R$ 3,1 billion in security this year, more than double what was spent seven years ago.
