Márcio Lacerda will end his term in "solitude".

The mayor of Belo Horizonte, Márcio Lacerda (PSB), is ending his second term alone; in addition to having broken with the president of the City Council and the leader of his government, the head of the municipal executive vetoed the candidacy of Paulo Brant (PSB) and saw part of his party ally with candidate João Leite (PSDB); the alliance was a consequence of a request from the PSDB senator Aécio Neves; businessmen from entities such as Fecomércio-MG, the Federation of Industries (Fiemg) and FCDL-MG had criticized the alliance; the PSB, in fact, had already launched Brant's pre-candidacy for mayor of Belo Horizonte.

Besides having broken with the president of the City Council and the leader of his government, the head of the municipal executive vetoed the candidacy of Paulo Brant (PS) and saw part of his party flock to João Leite (PSDB). According to the column Online RadarThe alliance was a consequence of a request from the PSDB senator Aécio Neves.

Currently, Lacerda supports the candidacy of his deputy mayor, Délio Malheiros (PSD), with whom he has clashed on several occasions in the past and whose eventual victory could make his candidacy for governor of Minas Gerais viable in 2018.

Earlier this month, business leaders signed a letter criticizing Lacerda's alliance with the PSDB. According to the text, politicians who make top-level deals "insist on reducing political activity to shortcuts for the satisfaction of particular and group interests, committed to patronage and corporatism" (see here).

After being dismissed by Mayor Marcio Lacerda, economist Paulo Brant (PSB) stated what, according to him, was the real reason for the withdrawal of his candidacy: "the fear of defeat and the end of Lacerda's political career."

"I think he has a weak character," the economist said during an interview with the newspaper O Tempo. "Changing your mind is one thing, changing your mind is a virtue. Now, relaxing principles based on circumstances and convenience, I think that's a moral weakness. And he has shown that he has that weakness."read here).

The following organizations signed the document criticizing Lacerda: Fecomércio-MG, FCDL-MG, CDL-BH, CIEMIG, Federaminas, ACMinas, FetCemg, FIEMG, OCMG, and FAEMG.
