With 24 days left until the deadline for filing Individual Income Tax returns, 7.719.840 declarations were submitted to the Federal Revenue Service by taxpayers as of 17 pm today (6). This number represents 28,1% of the total 27,5 million declarations that the Revenue Service expects to receive by April 30, the last day for submission.

This year, taxpayers with digital certification can file their pre-filled tax return on the IRS website, in the e-CAC area. This can also be done by a representative of the taxpayer who has digital certification and an electronic power of attorney registered with the agency.

Last year, 26.883.633 taxpayers submitted their income tax returns by the deadline. This number fell short of the 27 million forms expected by the tax authorities at the time. In 2013, 26,1 million individuals submitted the document.

The sooner taxpayers submit their tax return with accurate information to the tax authorities, the sooner they will receive their refund. Priority is given to individuals over 60 years of age, taxpayers with physical or mental disabilities, and those with serious illnesses.

The penalty for late filing is set at 1% per calendar month up to 20%. The minimum penalty is R$ 165,74. A step-by-step guide for each stage of the filing process is available on the Revenue Service website. Users can simply click on each point for more details. The filing deadline is April 30th.

Last month, the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service launched a series of 11 videos on YouTube to answer questions about filling out and submitting income tax returns. Called "TV Receita Responde" (TV Revenue Service Answers), the series aims to explain the main issues related to the IRPF (Brazilian Individual Income Tax Return) declaration in a simple way.
