Lídice: current federal pact is "unfair"

"It's no use just discussing the FPE [Fund for Participation of States and Municipalities], discussing a unified ICMS [Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services], if we don't really discuss the need to decentralize resources so that development reaches the population of Brazil who live in Brazilian cities," says the senator from Bahia.

Senator Lídice da Mata (PSB) from Bahia pointed to the centralization of resources among states as the cause of social inequalities that mainly affect the Northeast region, especially cities hit by drought.

"The situation becomes even more dramatic in Brazil today when we combine the uneven development of our country with an unfair federal pact, which is what we have today."

According to the socialist, discussions about the new distribution of resources from the State Participation Fund (FPE) and the unification of the ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) should focus on regional development, a central issue for the country in her view.

"It's no use just discussing the FPE [Fund for Participation of States and Municipalities], or a unified ICMS [Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services], if we don't really discuss the need to decentralize resources so that development reaches the population of Brazil who live in Brazilian cities."

The senator participated yesterday in Brasília in the 1st National Conference on Regional Development.
