Lasier Martins is elected senator in a close race.
Lasier Martins, the PDT candidate for the Senate seat in Rio Grande do Sul, has been mathematically elected. According to data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), with 99,76% of the polling stations counted, Lasier obtained 37,44% of the valid votes. PT candidate Olívio Dutra came in very close with 35,30%; in absolute numbers, the difference between Lasier and Olívio was 2,14% or 122 votes. Pedro Simon, of the PMDB, came in third with 16,09%; candidate Simone Leite (PSOL) obtained 10,56%, and the remaining candidates did not reach 1%.
