Kátia: Small parties are used to extort candidates.

Former Minister of Agriculture and Senator Kátia Abreu (PMDB) advocates for changes to the rules of the political system; "End of proportional coalitions. Only those with votes will be elected. The second point is the barrier clause. Parties will be required to have representation throughout the country or they will be excluded. Third: district voting will allow voters to easily monitor the mandates of their representatives. Candidates will not be able to flee their region"; according to Kátia, these changes would reduce the number of parties in Brazil to eight.

Tocantins 247 - Senator Kátia Abreu (PMDB), former Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, maintains that most small parties are used to extort candidates. The senator made this statement on her Twitter page on Friday, the 22nd: "Most of these small, opportunistic parties are used to extort candidates. Auctioning off parties for support in elections."

According to Kátia, Brazil currently has 35 registered political parties, and the Superior Electoral Court has more than 37 under review. If approved, there will be 72 parties for the 2018 general elections. "Does the people benefit from this?" the senator asks.

For Kátia Abreu, changes to the rules of politics are urgent. "End of proportional coalitions. Only those who have votes will be elected. The second point is the barrier clause. Parties will be required to have representation throughout the country or they will be excluded. Third: district voting will allow voters to easily monitor the mandate of their representatives. Candidates will not be able to flee their region," according to Kátia.

According to the senator, these three changes will reduce the number of parties to a maximum of eight nationwide.
