Jucá's children and stepchildren are targets of a Federal Police operation against embezzlement of funds.

The children and stepchildren of the government leader in the Senate, Romero Jucá (PMDB-RR), were targeted on Thursday by a Federal Police operation investigating the embezzlement of 32 million reais in public funds in the acquisition of part of a farm for the construction of housing under the Minha Casa Minha Vida program in Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima, said a source with knowledge of the matter.

Without naming those under investigation, the Federal Police reported that 17 court orders were executed, including nine search and seizure warrants and eight warrants for coercive questioning, in Boa Vista, Brasília, and Belo Horizonte, as part of the so-called "Ring of Gyges" operation.

"The suspects are being forcibly taken to the Federal Police, interrogated, and indicted for the crimes of embezzlement, money laundering, and criminal organization, which carry penalties of up to 30 years in prison. The investigations continue, with analysis of the seized material and investigation into the involvement of other members in the criminal activities," the Federal Police informed in a statement.

The Federal Police delegate in Roraima responsible for the investigation, Alan Ramos, stated that the owners of the Recreio Farm and those responsible for the construction company that carried out the Minha Casa Minha Vida (My House, My Life) project are being investigated. In addition, the superintendent of Caixa Econômica Federal in Roraima was also brought in for questioning regarding the release of funds for the project.

According to a source with knowledge of the operation, Jucá's children and stepchildren are among the targets of the investigations. A report in IstoÉ magazine last year stated that the Recreio Farm was owned by Jucá's family.

"There are four landowners who sold the land at an inflated price. The market value was approximately 3,5 million reais, but the land was sold for 4,5 million," the police chief stated in a press conference in Roraima.

"Another 31 million were embezzled during construction. Part of the investigation points mainly to irregularities in the concrete, which is the largest part of the project," he added, citing that the total value of the project was 185 million reais.

The government leader in the Senate issued an official statement denouncing what he called "yet another flamboyant chapter in a series of abuses that have been unfolding in recent years," this time against his family.

According to Jucá, the episode could have been avoided. "All the authorities had to do was request the attached documents proving that no crime was committed," said the senator, adding that he will release all the documents that "will demonstrate the ineptitude of today's operation."

According to the Federal Police delegate, so far the investigation does not involve any politicians, but the investigations will continue based on the judicial warrants served this Thursday and, if suspicion arises involving any politician with special legal privileges, the appropriate referral will be made to higher courts.

"There is police work involved in every operation to analyze what was seized. If there is a link to any other people, it will be forwarded and the correct course of action will be taken," he stated.
