Brazil Agency - The state court of Goiás has ordered that the landless families who have been occupying part of a farm belonging to the Agropecuária Santa Mônica group since last Sunday (31) leave the site. Located in Corumbá de Goiás, about 150 kilometers from Brasília, the property belongs to Senator and candidate for governor of Ceará, Eunício Oliveira (PMDB).
In his decision, the judge of the District of Corumbá de Goiás, Levine Raja Gabaglia Artiaga, granted a period of 48 hours, from the notification to the leaders of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), for the occupants to leave the site voluntarily. According to the judge's press office, a court officer was on site and notified the landless yesterday morning (3). Agência Brasil was unable to contact the occupation leaders.
If the landless families do not leave the site voluntarily by the end of the stipulated period, the police are authorized to intervene to ensure the repossession of the land. The judge's decisions must be reported to the Secretary of Public Security of Goiás, Joaquim Cláudio Figueiredo Mesquita, the State Public Prosecutor's Office, and the local police authorities.
In the ruling, the judge emphasizes that, by entering the farm without authorization, the movement violated a court order previously issued at the request of the Santa Mônica group. According to the MST (Landless Workers' Movement), the property has approximately 20 hectares (equivalent to 20 football fields) and the occupation is the largest carried out by the movement in Goiás in the last ten years. Furthermore, according to the movement, the objective of the initiative is to alert society to the fact that most of the deputies and senators in the current legislature represent the interests of large rural producers, to the detriment of family farmers and rural workers.
Senator Eunício Oliveira, however, assures that the rural property is productive and has been operating for over 25 years in a region free of agrarian conflicts. In a statement, the senator also guaranteed that the farm complies with all tax, labor, and environmental regulations, which is why the group classifies the MST's action as "a surprising act."
