Electoral court removes 11 mayors from office in Minas Gerais.
The disqualifications stem from irregularities committed in the 2012 municipal election; a total of 67 of the 853 mayors elected in the state have already been reported to the Electoral Court.
Mines 247 – A total of 67 of the 853 mayors elected in 2012 in the state have already been reported to the Minas Gerais Electoral Court for committing some type of irregularity, of which 10 have already had their mandates revoked. In four cities, new elections were held, and in the other six, the candidates who came in second place won. According to the legislation, the second-place candidate is only elected if the winner, whose mandate was revoked, does not obtain more than 50% of the valid votes. This was the case in the cities of Juvenília, Corinto, São Francisco, Senhora do Porto, Arcos, and Paraisópolis.
According to information from Estado de Minas, the municipality of Santana dos Cataguases will join the list of municipalities whose mayors elected in 2012 have been removed from office. On the same day, voters in the city will have to choose a mayor and vice-mayor to lead the municipal executive branch. Furthermore, almost 11 months after the election, lawsuits and appeals against 39 cities in Minas Gerais are still being processed in the electoral districts, the Regional Electoral Court (TRE), and the Superior Electoral Court (STE).
In eight of these cities, new elections may take place. Six other municipalities have pending cases. At the Regional Electoral Court (TRE), 14 mayors are awaiting judgment. There are also 11 more cities where the runner-up in the 2012 election could take office. When it comes to reversing disqualifications, the TRE-MG has ruled in favor of 17 municipal leaders who were registered voters, in the first instance, in the electoral zones.
