Judge demands explanation regarding security at UIM.
The Children and Youth Court judge, Ney Alcântara, wants information within 48 hours about the security of the buildings of the Male Inpatient Units (UIM), Youth and Adult Units (Uija) and Provisional Unit (UIP); the order comes after minors assaulted monitors at the UIM and seven juvenile offenders escaped from inpatient units during the early morning hours of Thursday (10).
Alagoas247 - After riots and escapes of socio-educational students in the Male (UIM), Youth and Adult (Uija) and Provisional (UIP) detention units, the Childhood and Youth judge, Ney Alcântara, informed that he will send, on the morning of this Friday (11), an official letter to the Secretary of Resocialization and Social Inclusion, Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Alberto Luna, determining that within 48 hours the secretary inform what the security system is in the buildings of the units.
The decision comes after minors assaulted monitors at the UIM and seven juvenile offenders escaped from detention units during the early hours and morning of Thursday (10). Five of them were at Uija, which houses young people aged 18 to 21, in Tabuleiro do Martins, and two others at UIP, which has inmates up to 17 years old, next to the Department of Roads (DER) building.
According to the magistrate, if there are escapes, it's because security is compromised. "I haven't yet officially received information about the escapes, but I'm already preparing a letter to the secretary so that he explains, within 48 hours, how the security system works in the buildings because if there are escapes, it's because there are problems with the security of the units," said Ney Alcântara.
Regarding the possible closure of the Temporary Inpatient Unit (UIP) building, the judge informed that he has not yet received the request from the State Public Prosecutor's Office (MPE) and the Public Defender's Office, but that as soon as he receives it he will assess whether to order the closure.
According to Seris, the accommodations housing the young offenders at Uija, which now operates in the former UIP building, are deteriorated due to a riot that occurred in the building a few months ago, which allegedly facilitated the escape of the inmates. The Military Police were called in to try to recapture the fugitives, but have not yet succeeded.
