Iran: "Projecting on July 13th without respecting the environment is repeating the same mistake"

“We have already experienced situations like this right here in our city, with engineering works that were highly praised at a certain point, but which nature later came to claim its price and its space. It is always necessary to have caution and sensitivity regarding these works,” said the Workers' Party councilman, making direct reference to the creation of the Coroa do Meio neighborhood, which was carried out by João Alves Filho (DEM), the same person who is now filling in the river.

247 - Councilor Iran Barbosa (PT), defended, this Thursday (28), in a speech at the Chamber, that the city hall of Aracaju carry out the work to contain the advance of the waters over the 13 de Julho neighborhood without disregarding the environmental issue. According to Iran, for a long time the model of large works carried out based solely on engineering decisions prevailed, but, he stressed, currently, it is necessary to associate this outdated model with the environmental concept, which is a more recent achievement of rights in the history of humanity.

"Understanding that the discussion taking place regarding the works on 13 de Julho Avenue needs to take into consideration two aspects: engineering and the environment," he said. According to the Workers' Party member, there was a time when administrators in Aracaju and the state of Sergipe believed that responding to the population's demands meant carrying out large engineering works and major constructions.

“This addressed the needs of the population at a certain point. But the great challenge we have to face today is to try to adequately combine the responses to the population's needs with public works, constructions, and engineering, while also addressing environmental concerns and respecting environmental law,” he emphasized.

For Iran, the works at Praia 13 de Julho need to follow this line, providing an engineering solution without neglecting environmental concerns. With this equation solved, the councilman believes it's possible to address social demands in that area while guaranteeing environmental preservation, responding to security and urban mobility issues without creating other problems in the future due to poorly studied and unforeseen environmental impacts.

“We have already experienced situations like this right here in our city, with engineering projects that were highly praised at a certain point, but which nature later claimed as its price and reclaimed. It is always necessary to exercise caution and sensitivity regarding these projects,” he said, referring to the creation of the Coroa do Meio neighborhood.

According to the Workers' Party member, the role of the newly created Municipal Secretariat for the Environment is precisely to engage in dialogue with the infrastructure and engineering sectors of the municipal government to preserve environmental aspects during the execution of projects.

“If we forget this, we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes that have been made in the past. And when we repeat those mistakes, it is a sign of ignorance. I would like us to get it right,” he emphasized.
