Ceara 247 - State Representative Dr. Silvana (PMDB), from the Assembly of God evangelical church, was announced as president of the Human Rights and Citizenship Commission. Famous for her controversial stances and defense of projects that combat same-sex relationships and the reduction of the age of criminal responsibility, the choice of the parliamentarian to preside over the commission was received with some surprise by other representatives. The choice was an agreement between the PMDB and the Board of Directors. In the previous legislature, in the Federal Chamber, the appointment of an evangelical, Pastor Feliciano, to the presidency of the Human Rights Commission generated controversy and a reaction from social movements. In the Legislative Assembly, in the previous term, the commission was chaired by then-representative Eliane Novaes (PSB), of a progressive profile. The appointment of the PMDB member should take place next Tuesday, the 10th.

Congresswoman Fernanda Pessoa (PR) is also vying for a position on the committee. In today's session, while welcoming the nomination of Dr. Silvana, the congresswoman said she believes that the PMDB member will certainly "refrain from presiding over the committee when matters that could embarrass her are on the agenda." Meanwhile, PSOL member Renato Roseno argues that it is contradictory to place a conservative figure at the head of the Human Rights Committee, an important body in legislative bodies for expanding and giving relevance to the rights of victims of all forms of violence. "I voted against the choice for president. Human rights must have freedom; there cannot be prejudice."

Roseno also said that he had offered his name to chair the commission. Since he was not approved, he intends to become a member and defend, for example, femicide, the extermination of young black people, the rights of people with disabilities, children and adolescents, traditional peoples, people with chronic illnesses, among others. The parliamentarian emphasizes that among the major problems of the State that must be combated are the overcrowding of the penal system and insecurity. "The right to live without violence, whether gender-based or racial, must be defended. I am against any and all fundamentalism." He also said he is convinced that many parliamentarians want to defend customs from the 18th century.
