Government pays civil servants' salaries in installments; police call it an 'affront'.
The Finance Secretary of the Sartori government, Giovani Feltes, confirmed that civil servants will receive only R$ 650 this Friday as the first installment of their salaries; the remaining deposits should be made by August 19th, but the government points out that further payments may occur this Friday, although this has not been confirmed; the government attributes the reduction in the installment amount to the fact that the State's net revenue closed the month of July approximately R$ 100 million lower than that of August – falling from R$ 2,25 billion to R$ 2,14 billion – which meant that the State has just over R$ 232 million in cash; to pay the net amount of salaries for the direct administration, R$ 996 million is needed.
On the 21 - The Finance Secretary of the Sartori government, Giovani Feltes, confirmed this Thursday (28) that civil servants will receive only R$ 650 this Friday as the first installment of their salaries. The remaining deposits should be made by August 19, but the government points out that new payments may occur this Friday, although there is no confirmation of this.
The government attributes the decrease in the installment amount to the fact that the state's net revenue for July was approximately R$ 100 million lower than in August – falling from R$ 2,25 billion to R$ 2,14 billion – which meant the state had just over R$ 232 million in cash. To pay the net amount of salaries for the direct administration, R$ 996 million is needed.
The drop in revenue was driven by a 46% decrease in federal transfers during the period.
The news of the installment plan generated an immediate response from public employees. The leadership of the Union of Clerks, Inspectors and Investigators of the Civil Police of RS (Ugeirm) considered the installment plan an "affront".
“The police must further intensify Operation Standard in response to this affront from the Sartori/PMDB government. Now is the time to reduce the activities of the Civil Police to the bare minimum and completely stop police operations. While the government mocks us, we put our lives at risk, even with delayed salaries and our bills piling up. We have to show the population that we are not puppets in the hands of this incompetent government. We will not serve as poster children while our salaries are paid in installments and we receive R$ 650 at the end of the month. It is time for the Agents and also the Delegates to take a stand. We will contact ASDEP and propose a joint action against the installment payments of salaries. After all, the delegates are also being disrespected with the installment payments of salaries and cannot passively watch this outrage from the Sartori/PMDB government,” says Fábio Castro, vice-president of Ugeirm.
