Governor asks the population for help to cope with the rain.
Governor Rui Costa is asking the public to report any potential water infiltration into properties or any other type of threat, so that people can be relocated from at-risk areas affected by the heavy rains in Salvador; "I know people are afraid to leave their homes because of their belongings, which were sometimes acquired after 5, 10, 15 years of work. But it's better to save human lives," said Rui.
Bahia 247 - In a press conference this Monday (11) after the inauguration of Hemóvel 2, from Hemoba, Governor Rui Costa Rui (PT) asked the population to report possible water infiltrations on land or any type of risk, so that people can be relocated from the risk areas that are being punished by the rain in Salvador.
"I understand people's fear of leaving their homes because of their possessions, which were sometimes acquired after 5, 10, or 15 years of work. But it's better to save human lives," said Rui Costa.
The governor said he held another meeting with the Minister of National Integration, Gilberto Occhi, to discuss new slope containment projects. According to him, the government is already working on 98 slope stabilization projects, which should be completed by December 2016. Even so, the number would be insufficient.
"Even considering the 50 projects the city is undertaking, it's still not enough to stabilize the entire slope. We will need to start other projects."
Rui also spoke about the slope that slid in Baixa do Fiscal, where four people died yesterday (10). According to him, the area had not been diagnosed as at risk by Civil Defense.
"The place where there were victims is in the same region where I was born, near my house, my parents' house. This was not an area that had initially been diagnosed as being at imminent risk. Even when I flew over it with the mayor (ACM Neto) and the minister (Gilberto Occhi), 15 days ago, I even marked that specific slope and there was no apparent sign of risk."
