Goiás reduces the number of homicides by 9,6% in the first quarter.
With a decrease in nine of the ten largest cities in the state, including the capital, the state ended the first quarter of 2015 with a 9,62% reduction in the number of homicides compared to the same period in 2014; in relation to the rate per 100 inhabitants, the decrease was 10,85%; regarding the ten most populous municipalities in Goiás, the highlight in the first quarter was Trindade; a city neighboring the capital had a 53,85% reduction in the absolute number of homicides compared to the period from January to March 2014.
Goiás 247 - With a decrease in nine of the ten largest cities in the state, including the capital, the state of Goiás ended the first quarter of 2015 with a 9,62% reduction in the number of homicides compared to the same period in 2014. Regarding the rate per 100 inhabitants, which is the methodology used internationally for studies of crime and violence, the decrease was 10,85%, according to data from the Security Observatory of the Goiás State Secretariat of Public Security and Penitentiary Administration.
Regarding the ten most populous municipalities in Goiás, Trindade stood out in the first quarter. The city, neighboring the capital, saw a 53,85% reduction in the absolute number of homicides compared to the period from January to March 2014. Other notable municipalities included Luziânia (53,49% reduction) and Águas Lindas de Goiás (36,67% less), both in the area surrounding the Federal District, as well as Aparecida de Goiânia (22,22% less). Anápolis, the third largest municipality in Goiás, had 8,11% fewer homicide records than last year so far.
The trend observed in Goiás is also evident in the capital. The number of homicide records in Goiânia in the first three months of the year was 4,4% lower than that recorded in the same period last year. In Goiânia, the largest reductions occurred in the Integrated Public Security Areas North, with a 47,62% decrease, and South, with a 33,33% decrease.
According to Secretary Joaquim Mesquita, in states where there has been a reduction in this type of crime, it is common for the trend to begin in the interior and then reach the capitals – the same phenomenon that is beginning to be observed in Goiás.
In terms of large regions, according to the division adopted by the SSPGO planning, the area surrounding the Federal District obtained the best results in the quarter. From January to March, the drop in the number of homicides was 21,24% in the region, with the aforementioned highlights being Águas Lindas and Luziânia.
The Goiânia Metropolitan Region mirrored the state's trend in the first quarter. The 20 municipalities that make up the region collectively showed 26 fewer homicides than in the same period of 2014, which corresponds to a decrease of 9,32% - or 10,76% in the rate per 100 inhabitants.
